Country Overview

Turkey is located in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia with a total land area of 770,760 km. 7,200 km of coastline border the Black Sea to the North, the Aegean Sea to the Southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to the South. Climate is temperate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Terrain is mostly mountainous, with narrow coastal plain and a high central plateau.

Government type is a republican parliamentary democracy with the capital in Ankara where President Ahmed Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit reside.

Population is 66.3 million with a 1.5% rate of natural increase.

Language , Turkish, is the first language of 90% of Turkey's population, belonging to the Altay branch of the Uralo-Atlay linguistic family.

Economy includes both traditional agriculture (employing 40% of the workforce) and modern industry and commerce. GDP per capita is approximately US$6,800 with an unemployment rate of 5.6%.
